Falling objects

Statement: I opened up a new topic for this, because the old one was clogging up the It's the Mind thread.

I'll get to the rest of the argument later, I gotta go right now.
Observation: They're not the same weight. Didn't you read it? two spheres of equal volume with different densities. This is the experiment that Galileio famously performed (although he didn't really); hence the reference to the Tower of Pisa.

Statement: It is true that objects with a large surface area have a lower maximum falling speed - but "common sense" tells us that larger objects are heavier, so heavy objects will tend to fall slower than light objects.

Why do you always put Statement: or Observation: before a post? I've always wondered that.

Re: Falling objects

Query: Is this really the place to ask that? However...
Answer: It's an homage to that great droid, HK-47. And I've done it for... well, ages. I couldn't possibly stop now.
(Observation: Speaking of "really the place", this only went in RPP because the thread that spawned it was in RPP. We could do with a Science forum, or expanding the Technology forum to Science and Tech.)

Re: Falling objects

does this really belong in the philosphy, religeon and politics forum? prehapes there should be a science thread.

In order for your test to be accurate both would have to have equal volume, be dropped at exactly the same time, and be dropped from exactly the same hieght. Something may have gone wrong.

I thought I read somewhere in a science textbook that Acceleration of Gravity is 9.8 m/s. This means that all free falling objects reach that speed before hitting the ground. This means that if if two objects of the same volume if dropped at the same time from the same hieght they should hit the ground at the same time

I could be wrong through its been a few years since I've studied this.

Clarification: Acceleration is not the same as speed; the value is 9.8 m/s/s, meaning that a falling object picks up an extra 9.8 m/s of speed downwards for every second it's in the air. However, since the Earth's gravitic field gets weaker the further away from the centre you travel, it's only 9.8 m/s/s at sea level. (Variation over a few hundred metres is negligible, though, especially since "9.8" has been rounded off anyway.)
Statement: However, drag, friction or air resistance limits the maximum speed an object can fall at, hence the term "terminal velocity", or final speed. This drag is determined by surface area and the shape of that area. If there was no air, you could keep on accelerating, at least until you hit the ground. So yes, any two objects with the same volume and surface area, whatever their differing weights, will hit the ground at the same time if dropped from the same height.

solution: move the thread

Re: Falling objects

Rhetorical Query: What am I, a Mod? I already put in the request, now I can only wait.

Admonishment: This forum is shortly to become Religion, Philosophy and Science, with politics moving to the news forum. And this thread is far more at home here than in General Chat, as the majority of scientific debate occurs here.

Observation: Your post is also worthless spam. If you feel a topic is in the wrong location, report it so that the staff can decide whether to move it or not, don't play vigilante.

Headbut through drywall: I misread your post and I was wrong. Let this thread die now and everyone except Zack stop doing the Query thing.
